For a warm, cozy night's sleep, nothing beats a down or all silk comforter. With the right down comforter, there's no reason to be ever cold or uncomfortable again. Here are some buying tips. First decide how warm of a comforter you want. There are 3 basic levels: Light Weight equals the warmth of one wool blanket or 2 light cotton blankets. Light weight comforters are good for summer and warmer climates. Medium Weight equals the weight of 2 wool blankets or a blanket and a quilt. This is the most popular all year round weight. Heavy Weight equals the warmth of 3 wool blankets or an electric blanket or 2 heavy quilts. This is an excellent choice for very cold winter climates.
What is Down Fill Power?
Cal King Bed
It is defined as the number of cubic inches occupied by 1 ounce of down. Fill powers above 600 define the luxury market for down comforters. When your comforter has a high fill power, it offers more warmth for less weight. But there is a top end limit for both cost and capability. Down filled products with 800 to 900 fill power are extremely expensive and represent the highest level achievable.
What is Down Fill Weight?
Fill weight is the total number of fill ounces in your down comforter. Make sure you are comparing apples to apples when comparing down comforters. Comforters with mostly feathers and a low percentage of down are generally a good product with a low price point. BUT, a 60 ounce 5% down comforter down comforter may only have half the insulation value of a 30 ounce 95% down comforter.
Why is the percentage of Down Fill important?
Down comforters have a mixture of down and feathers. Down is the good stuff. You want as much down as you can get in a down comforter. The only drawback is the price. Comforters with more down and less feathers cost more. No down comforters have 100% down. 95% down is the highest percent down fill on the market, with 5% feathers. The majority of comforters on the market have 75% down fill, which is good, but still allows you to feel the feathers inside. As well as being soft, light and fluffy, comforters with a high percentage of down fill provide more insulation then those with a lower percentage of down.
What is Baffled Wall Construction?
Baffle wall channels are narrow strips of fabric sewn between the top and bottom covers that eliminate cold spots and keeps the down spread evenly throughout the comforter. Without baffling, all the down would bunch together in the corners leaving you cold in the middle.
What is thread count and what is best for my comforter?
High count, 400 plus, cotton covers are soft, durable, down proof and breathable. Thread count is the number of threads per square inch of fabric. The finest quality Down Comforters will have 100% cotton covers with a thread count of a t least 200. The higher the thread count (the higher the price), the more durable and softer the cover will be.
A higher thread count cover will protect the down from impurities as well as keep the fill inside the comforter. A 100% cotton cover will be breathable and enhances the insulation and fluffiness of the comforter.
Allergic to Down?
If you are allergic to down or feathers (less than 1% of the population is) then make sure you buy a Brand Name down comforter from a reputable dealer. How do I make my comforter more "poofy"?
When you first open your comforter package from the factory, it will take a few days to expand to it's full capacity. You may want to put it in the dryer for a few minutes to fluff out.
If you want your comforter to look big and poofy on your bed, you will want to select a winter type comforter with a high fill weight. Remember, that the aim of a down comforter is to weigh as little as possible while providing maximum warmth. And comforters that weigh less, naturally occupy less space. So it's a trade off.
What temperature rating comforter should I get?
That's a great question, but there is no precise answer for it because people have a wide variety of comfort levels regarding temperature, especially while sleeping. If you tend to sleep "hot" then get a cooler rating and vice versa. Of course if your significant other has the opposite sleeping comfort temperature then you have to determine who's more tolerant.
Comforters are rated for all 4 seasons. If you consider the fill power, fill weight, and the percentage of down fill in a comforter, you'll see that you get what you pay for and that the "Luxury" category will end up giving you the most comfortable night's rest.

What comforter size will fit my bed? Here are the industry standard bed sizes and the foot and side drop sizes for most comforters measured from the top of the bed to the bottom of the comforter.

You can adjust the drop of the comforter on the foot side either up or down by placing pillows over or under the comforter at the head of the bed.
What is a duvet?
Duvet is the French word for comforter. In the US, duvet commonly refers to a separate protective cover (like a giant slip cover) for your down or silk comforter. A duvet cover protects your comforter from getting soiled. This allows you the freedom to use your comforter for long periods of time without needing to wash it. It is of course much easier to just wash the duvet cover. Plus washing the entire down comforter takes away from its loft and insulation ability.
It is also easier to quickly "re-decorate" your bedroom by just changing out the color/pattern of your duvet cover.
How do I keep my comforter clean?
You want to wash your comforter as little as possible in order to retain its maximum insulation value. That is why the protection of a duvet cover can be very beneficial.
Spot wash your comforter whenever you can. You may wash your comforter at home if your machine is large enough. Be sure to thoroughly dry your comforter. It takes about twice the time to dry a comforter as it normally takes to dry one load of clothes.
For best results and peace of mind you may want to have a professional launder (wash) it. Be aware that DRY cleaning can leave an annoying but faint chemical smell.
Fluff your comforter at least once or twice a week, whenever you change the sheets is a good rule of thumb. Air out your comforter 2 or 3 times a year whenever it's cool and breezy outside (or) put it on fluff dry in your dryer - Spring and Fall cleaning are good times.
Almost all comforters are machine washable BUT read the instructions carefully. DO NOT use bleach or fabric softener (or) fabric softener in the dryer! Use very little mild soap in warm water on gentle and run your comforter through at least 2 rinse cycles to get ALL the soap out.
NEVER LINE DRY your comforter (wet clumps could develop mildew)! Always use tumble dry on low heat settings. Throw in a couple of clean tennis balls to break up the clumps in the comforter when drying. Your dryer could take 2 to 4 hours to completely do the job.
Make sure your comforter is COMPLETELY DRY before you take it out of the dryer for the last time. Also top loading washers do NOT do as good a job as side loaders because the down tends to float to the top. We recommend you have it washed professionally. How do I store my comforter?
NEVER STORE IN PLASTIC! Use a cotton cover. Cotton breathes, while plastic can trap moisture and promote mildew.
